on the road, it's what we want to do.
Heading for the
Alice with a dinkum show and crew.
With the ruggedest rig that we could find,
no rattle trap would do.
Just learning how to live the life in the
land of the kangaroo.
Now look out for the shorthorns,
the cattle signs are warned
You'll see them dead beside the road,
I guess they won't be mourned
Some people won't by travel and lights,
I guess it hasn't dawned
Like mugs who write their names on rocks,
this countryside is scorned
Well we hit the
Barclay
Tablelands and what a plain to see
It really is a big land,
it's open and it's free
The home of the
Flying
Doctor, what a page in history
We're heading for the big heart, the
Northern
Territory
Well another day, how many k's,
el even hundred odd
We're smack bang in the
middle of the famous
River
Todd
And racing up the river bed,
it struck me very odd
Boats with hairy legs,
it's true, so help me
God.
Well I met the local poet,
he said his name was
Ted.
He didn't know how to play guitar,
he played a box instead.
It's all so very simple,
just drink two dozen cans.
Squeeze it like a bagpipe and
belt it with your hands.
I met a girl named
Lola dancing up a storm
She had a
German background, she said her
name was
Braun
Three quarters
Aborigine and
Irish blood as
well
Whether she had any
land rights is bloody
hard to tell
We've had our disappointments,
but there's no way I'd trade
Until I've played in every town
and all my dues are paid
And when I've stored those pictures
where memories never fade
I'll find that dreamy bungalow
by the river in the shade
But the main thing, mate, is we're on the road,
it's what we want to do
Headin' for the
Alice with a vinkum show and crew
With a ruggedness rigged that we
could find a rattletrap would do
Just learnin' how to live the life
on the land of the kangaroo
